Many compact or entry-level DJ controllers only have unbalanced RCA master outputs. If the venue's mixer or stage box is more than 15 feet away, do not use long RCA cables. Instead, connect short RCA cables (under 6 feet) from the controller into a stereo passive DI box. Connect balanced XLR cables from the DI box outputs to the venue PA system.

Scenario 3: Connecting Through an Intermediate DJ Mixer

In club setups, the venue often has a permanent house mixer. If you are using a controller, connect the controller's master outputs into an open line-level input channel on the house mixer. Keep the controller's master output level at nominal (around 12 o'clock or 0 dB) and let the venue's audio engineer control the master volume from the house console.

  1. Power Down: Ensure the venue PA speakers or amplifiers are turned off before making any connections.
